Best Portable Jump Starter for Boats

For a boat, choose an IP-rated pack with attached cables and keep it in a dry locker: our top pick is the NOCO Boost HD GB70, IP65 and rated to 8.0L gas. Dead batteries are a familiar marine problem. BoatUS ranks a dead battery third among its towing calls at 9%, and notes that boat batteries can sit unused for weeks and be flat when you need them.

In detail

Who each one suits

Engine ratings, amps and capacities are each brand’s own figures; third-party test results are credited by name. We did not bench-test these units.

Best for boats#1

NOCO Boost HD GB70

The GB70 doubles the GB40’s rating: NOCO lists it for gas engines up to 8.0 liters and diesel up to 6.0 liters. Ford offers a dealer-installed GB70 kit on its Super Duty pickups, starting with the 2026 model year. Its IP65 rating and permanently attached cables suit boats and truck beds, and TechGearLab praises NOCO’s clamps on its larger packs for outdoor use.

Why it stands out

  • NOCO rates it at 2,000 peak amps for gas to 8.0L and diesel to 6.0L, with up to 40 jumps per charge (brand figures).
  • IP65 housing (NOCO rating) with permanently attached cables.
  • A 12V in/out port in addition to USB, so it can run 12V accessories.
Engine ratingGas to 8.0L, diesel to 6.0L
Peak amps2,000A (brand-stated)
BatteryLithium-ion, 56 Wh
WeightAbout 4.2 lb
ExtrasIP65, 12V in/out port, USB out, LED light

Good fit if

  • You run a gas V8, a mid-size diesel or a boat with an inboard engine.
  • You want NOCO’s protection features with more headroom than the GB40.

Skip it if

  • Your diesel is over 6.0L (many heavy-duty pickups) — the GBX155 has a higher rating.
  • You only need to start a small car — the GB40 is lighter and cheaper.
Best compact marine pack#2

NOCO Boost Plus GB40

The GB40 is the jump starter most of the big review roundups keep coming back to: The Drive names it best overall, Outdoor Life its best all-weather pick and Car and Driver its most compact. It is small enough for a glovebox, and NOCO rates it for gas engines up to 6.0 liters, which covers most cars, crossovers and many V8 SUVs.

Why it stands out

  • NOCO rates it at 1,000 peak amps for gas engines to 6.0L and diesel to 3.0L, with up to 20 jump starts per charge (brand figures).
  • Spark-proof clamps and reverse-polarity protection: if you mix up the clamps, an error light shows and it will not boost (per NOCO’s user guide).
  • IP65 with the ports closed, a built-in LED light and a USB output for charging a phone.
Engine ratingGas to 6.0L, diesel to 3.0L
Peak amps1,000A (brand-stated)
BatteryLithium-ion, 24 Wh
Weight2.45 lb
ExtrasIP65 (ports closed), USB out, LED light

Good fit if

  • You drive a car, small SUV or gas pickup up to about 6 liters.
  • You want something that lives in the glovebox or door pocket.
  • You value a brand with a long track record over the biggest amp number.

Skip it if

  • You drive a diesel bigger than 3.0L — look at the GB70 or GBX155.
  • You want a pack that doubles as a large power bank — at 24 Wh it is small.

Car and Driver found the 24 Wh battery is the GB40’s trade-off: one jump used a noticeable share of its charge. Top it up after every use.

GOOLOO GT4000S

GOOLOO’s GT4000S is the value route to big-engine ratings. GOOLOO lists it for gas engines up to 12.0 liters and diesel up to 10.0 liters at a Mid-range price, and Outdoor Life names it best for diesel trucks. It recharges quickly over a 100W two-way USB-C port, and it has a screen that shows the remaining charge.

Why it stands out

  • GOOLOO rates it at 4,000 peak amps for gas to 12.0L and diesel to 10.0L (brand-stated).
  • 100W two-way USB-C: GOOLOO says a full recharge takes about 1.2 hours.
  • IP65, an LCD screen and GOOLOO’s warranty of up to 30 months.
Engine ratingGas to 12.0L, diesel to 10.0L
Peak amps4,000A (brand-stated)
BatteryLithium polymer
WeightNot listed by brand
ExtrasIP65, 100W two-way USB-C, LCD screen

Good fit if

  • You drive a diesel pickup and want a high rating without a Premium price.
  • You like seeing the exact charge level instead of four LEDs.

Skip it if

  • You want the longest-established brand — NOCO has the longer review history.
  • You need it to be compact — the GB40 is smaller.

Some Amazon listings for this product show the older GT4000 name. Check that the listing title says GT4000S before you buy.

Batteries flat at the ramp?

Tips

Three things that make the difference

01

Close the ports

NOCO’s IP65 rating on the GB40 and GB20 applies only with the ports closed. Keep the covers shut aboard.

02

Store it dry and secured

IP65 means protected against water jets, not immersion. A dry, latched locker keeps the pack from sliding around and out of standing water.

03

Recharge after the season

Recharge after use and before storage. Clore suggests every 90 days and GOOLOO every 3 months, while NOCO’s FAQ text says every 4–6 months.

Honest note

None of the reputable packs we found is rated for immersion. IP65 covers dust and water jets only, so a pack that goes overboard or sits in bilge water may be ruined. Treat it as splash-resistant, not waterproof.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can a portable jump starter start a boat?

Yes, if the starting battery is 12V and the pack is rated for the engine size. BoatUS suggests carrying a small jump pack. For larger inboards and diesels, check the brand’s diesel rating; NOCO rates the GB70 to 6.0L diesel.

What does IP65 mean for a jump starter on a boat?

Under IEC 60529, the 6 means dust-tight and the 5 means protected against water jets from a nozzle. It does not mean immersion; that is the 7 or 8 rating. An IP67 rating also does not imply jet protection, so look for the exact code.

Are there waterproof jump starters for boats?

Some sellers use the word, but check the IP code. The picks here are IP65, and NOCO’s GB40 rating applies with the ports closed. We did not find a reputable model rated for immersion, so keep any pack in a dry locker.

Why do boat batteries go dead so often?

BoatUS says boat batteries, unlike car batteries, can sit unused for weeks or months, and notes wet-cell boat batteries typically last five years or fewer. A maintainer during storage helps; O’Reilly says a maintainer charges only when voltage drops.

Can I leave a jump starter on my boat?

Only within the brand’s temperature range and in a dry, secured spot. NOCO’s FAQ for its Boost Max line lists -4°F to 122°F. A closed console in summer sun can run hot, so bring the pack home between trips if in doubt.

Can I jump a boat from my truck?

It is possible with cables, but on a ramp or a dock a portable pack is far simpler, and Interstate Batteries notes a car-to-car style jump can damage the donor vehicle if voltage spikes. A pack also stays aboard when the truck is parked up the ramp.

Keep a dry, IP-rated pack aboard
